Note about Chess

I don't know whether you noticed in my Profile that Chess is in the second place right after art. Believe it or not, Yours Truly is playing chess! Serious chess. I go to several OTB (Over The Board) chess tournaments every year and although I won couple hundred dollars here and there I'm not good in OTB. So, years ago I started in Correspondence Chess, also known as Postal Chess. Low and behold Yours Truly started to do well. In correspondence chess I seem to avoid the blunders I usually make in OTB chess.

This year I entered the 2010 Colorado Correspondence Chess Championship and I was the second seed. Hopefully, I will make it into the finals. The reason I'm telling you all of this is to bring the correspondence chess to your attention. It is not a well known activity. Some people like to play chess but either they think they are no good or they do not have an opportunity to play competitive OTB chess. Correspondence chess is ideal for getting your feet wet and it can be played anywhere.

Thought you ought to know.

Greece and European Union

Today, we had a scare on the Wall Street. The Dow Jones dropped over 1,000 points at around 3:00 pm and then made up the loss a little bit so that we were down about 350 points for the day. The reason: Financial situation in Greece and other European Union countries. Greece is leading the way into the financial abyss. President Obama, Democrats and Republicans listen carefully and take notes. The dire situation in Greece was caused by the Greek government. The news outlets are telling us that the Greek demonstrators are targeting symbols of capitalism and even killing people. Why are they targeting the symbols of capitalism when the crisis has been caused by government is anyone's guess. Actually, there should be no guessing involved. Greek government like all European governments and now also United States are spending like crazy bestowing all kinds of benefits and entitlements on their citizens using money they do not have. Greek spending went through the roof so that Greeks can have everything they dream off and then some. Finally, the well ran dry.

The Greeks are looking at other countries to bail them out. Bailouts do not work. Let me repeat BAILOUTS DO NOT WORK. We can see it right here in the United States. President Obama and Democrats spent lots of money in the first few months in the office, much more than all presidents before him combined, and the results are nowhere to be seen. They can demagogue the issue any which way, the only result which is sure is that we are following in the footsteps of Greece and all European Union countries.....yes, to the proverbial financial abyss.

Situation in Europe is a lesson to be learned by our politicians. But I will bet anything that this lesson will be lost on them. Why? Because of their ideology! What exactly caused the crisis in Greece. Greece grew the government quickly just like President Obama is trying to do. The salaries commanded by the Greek government workers are staggeringly high. Add to that their benefits and you do not have to be a Harvard graduate to know that something will break sooner or later. The Greek government also bestowed unspeakable benefits and entitlements on regular folk and Greek workers. Everyone loved what amounted to a Change They Can Believe In. And they believed in it. The European mentality of "You Have It and I don't - Fork It Over" got better of the people. In order to be able to afford the entitlements Greek government borrowed heavily. They ran high deficits and national debt skyrocketed. How did they imagine they will be able to repay these loans is a mystery. When the bill became due, the Greek government did not have the money. So now, other, still little bit more wealthy European Union countries will bail out Greece to the tune of $145 billion. I wonder what will happen when Portugal, Ireland, Italy, and Spain default on their loans.

The United States has been put on the same path by President Obama and the Democrats with a tacit approval from Republicans. High spending, new entitlements, nationalization of the health care industry, increased taxes, regulation of everything that moves, climate control legislation, open invitation to illegal aliens to come and share the paradise such as it is, and other nonsense legislation and regulations will take us to the edge of the abyss and into it just like it happened to Greece. Our so called leaders cannot claim that they are too stupid to know better and not to realize that they are de facto sabotaging the United States with their policies because they are all graduates of Ivy League schools or other great schools, and there are numerous examples of what happens when they follow their foolish policies. Therefore, in my opinion, there is only one explanation left that explains the misbehavior of our "leaders", and that is that they are knowingly destroying the United States of America.
